“When the CBSE started pushing exams, that’s when we started to worry,” says Puneeth Kothapa, who runs a chain of 14 schools called Narayana.
Narayana began by learning the basics. He bought Zoom licenses for every school’s “high-performing teaching staff” and used traditional blackboards to record and teach lessons.
Narayana already had a test app called “learn” and a parent app called “connect,” but Kothapa says they had to hurry to get live classes going.
Most of Narayana’s students want to do well on the entrance exams for engineering schools, which are usually given in April. Even though the government moved the exams to May, Kothapa says that the preparation must still go on.
Kothapa says, “We have given all our schools schedules with lessons and tests that need to be done during this time.”
Kothapa and his group were afraid at first, but they moved quickly. About 370,000 of the 400,000 parents in the Narayana network have downloaded the Connect app.
Also, 25,000 of their students in grades 10 and 12 (or 20%) have started taking tests on nLearn. Even for the live classes that are held on Zoom, they have made a simple app.

When there is a lockdown all over the country, going to a virtual school is bound to be confusing. At least for the first few weeks. But people in charge of schools like Kothapa and Goel could learn something from the crisis. They had to use online tools for learning that they may not have used before.
Kothapa has changed his mind about live classes, but Goel says it has always been hard for schools to use tech tools like smartboards. She says that the crisis has made her think differently. Goel says, “Even after Covid, this is a new way to learn.”
Kothapa has always run his own business, and he is already making plans to improve Narayana’s technology so that it can handle more online teaching. “All at once, 300,000 parents will go online to learn.
In the future, they might get the same kind of education. Kothapa says that schools can still teach core lessons, but doubt-solving, question banks, and remedial classes can be taught online.
